Top 10 things to do beside the parks at Walt Disney World!
Top 10 things to do beside the parks at Walt Disney World!
Have you ever wondered what there is to do besides the parks at Walt Disney World? Well here we give you the lowdown on what we think are the top 10 out of many!
- Movies Under The Stars
Do you want to watch some of your favourite movies under the stars? Well you can at your Disney resort hotel! They are normally shown near the outdoor pool using a blow up screen! Some resorts will even have a little campfire where you can roast marshmallows during the screening! Disney Vacation Club Members can also rent DVDs from their resorts for free. For your resorts movie schedule please ask at the front desk!
- Miniature Golf and Golfing
Whether you are looking for some family time away from the parks or a bit of time away from the kids relaxing, Walt Disney World has a golf course for you! With 2 miniature golf courses and 4 other golf courses, there is something for all ages and abilities.
The 2 miniature golf courses are Fantasia Gardens (located near the Swan/Dolphin resorts) and Winter Summerland Miniature Golf Course (located near Blizzard Beach). Each course has 2 sections to choose from and rumour has it one of them at Fantasia Gardens is super hard!!! Admission for the miniature golf course is included with some ticket packages, but it isn’t expensive if you are paying out of pocket.
The 4 golf courses are located at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. Three are 18 hole course and 1 is a 9 hole course. On the three 18 hole golf courses, players are required to use a golf cart (included in your green fee) to provide an enjoyable pace of play. For guests who prefer to walk the entire course, Disney’s Oak Trail Golf course (the 9 hole course) is recommended. Lessons are available and there are driving ranges as well. Why don’t you see if you can get yourself out of a Mickey shaped bunker!!
- Chip ‘N’ Dale’s Campfire Sing-Along
At Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground you will find this nightly show followed by a movie (weather dependant of course!!). As far as we are aware this is the only way to meet a character outside of the parks for free! The campfire sing-along starts with just that a sing-along with a cast member, followed by roasted marshmallows and then finally a visit from Chip ‘N’ Dale themselves for autographs, photos and fun. This will then be followed by the nightly movie screening! Be sure to check at the front desk of your Disney resort for schedules.
There are two options for fishing at Walt Disney World, a guided bass fishing excursion or dockside fishing. You can book either a 2 or 4 hour excursion and all equipment is included so no need to bring your own and if you are a beginner the guide will help you out along the way! All excursions and dockside fishing do have a catch and release policy. For dockside fishing all casting-rod fishing gear can be rented from the Fishin’ Hole at Old Man Island at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside.
There are arcades at most Walt Disney World hotels and are suitable for all ages! You have to ourchase a game card to be able to play and credit can be added to these inside the arcades. These game cards are rechargeable and can also be used at other resorts! All the arcades are open every day but closing times do vary so please do check!
The following resorts have arcades:
- All-Star Movies Resort
- All-Star Music Resort
- All-Star Sports Resort
- Animal Kingdom Lodge
- Beach Club Resort
- BoardWalk Inn Resort
- Caribbean Beach Resort
- Contemporary Resort
- Coronado Springs Resort
- Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground
- Grand Floridian Resort
- Old Key West
- Pop Century Resort
- Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter
- Port Orleans Resort – Riverside
- Saratoga Springs Resort
- Wilderness Lodge
- Yacht Club Resort
- Tri-Circle-D Ranch
If you love horses then the Tri-Circle-D Ranch at Fort Wilderness Resort is the place for you! You can just explore the ranch or do an activity or both! Here is where you can see the horses from the Magic Kingdom up close and even stroll through the stables and see Cinderella’s ponies! You may even discover the Dragon Calliope – a horse drawn musical instrument which was purchased by Walt Disney for Mickey Mouse Club Parade at Disneyland in the 1950s!! Pony rides are offered daily from 10am-5pm near Pioneer Hall and no booking is required but the rider must be 2 or above, no more than 48in, under 80lbs and be able to hold on by themselves! Other activities that are available are Horseback Trail Rides, Wagon Rides, Horse-Drawn Carriage Rides at Disney’s Port Orleans, Horse Drawn Carriage Rides at Disney’s Fort Wilderness and in December there are Holiday Sleigh Rides. Some of these do need booking in advance.
Or many other water sports for that matter! The marina at the Contemporary resort offers a whole selection of water sports including jet skiing, wake boarding, water skiing and parasailing!! Just imagine the photos from 450ft up in the air or if you are a lover of heights you can take the deluxe flight which will take you 600ft in the air!! There are obviously some restriction such as age and weight and reservations are highly recommended (got to www.sammyduvall.com for these).
- Take A Tour
Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes?? Well this could be your way to find out! Walt Disney World offer a number of backstage tours and also resort tours. While the tours in the parks do have a fee and do require an admission the resort tours are mostly free but for Disney Resort guests only. You can take the Keys to the Kingdom tour at the Magic Kingdom or get right into the heart of Animal Kingdom with the Wild Africa Trek. Each theme park has its own backstage tour and they are worth it. Reservations are essential for these as you can imagine they are fairly small intimate groups and sell out very quickly. They vary in time (anything from 1 hour to all day!) and vary in price as well. There is something for almost everyone.
You can sign up for a free guided tour at many of Disney’s resorts including Animal Kingdom Lodge, Boardwalk and Wilderness Lodge. You will need to check out the resorts front desk for tour times and availability.
- Water Parks
Yes we know we said outside the parks but they aren’t the same as the big four and don’t cost the same to get in (although if you are travelling from the UK they are included in your ticket prices!). Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach both offer thrill rides and chill rides and an excellent way to chill out without just being at the pool. It is also a great way to meet some Disney characters without having to queue for hours! With no fastpass+ or dining reservations it can certainly be a different pace to what we could consider as a normal park day!
- Characters In Flight
Characters in flight is a giant hot air balloon in Disney Springs that you can actually take a ride in! Lasting 10 minutes the balloon will ascend 400ft up in the air with up to 29 guests inside, you will also be able to see up to 10 miles in every direction! The balloon will not go any higher as it is tethered and will not fly if winds exceed 22mph or there is a storm. Guests will also need to transfer from an ECV or motorised scooter to a wheelchair to be able to ride. The balloon was custom built and is hand painted with numerous Disney characters and takes 210,000 cubic feet of helium to fill! Reservations are not required but there is a separate charge for this of $18 per child and $20 per adult.
