Top 10 rides for kids at Walt Disney World!
There is something for everyone at Walt Disney World but which of the rides are your kids going to love the most? Some are more thrilling than others though and some do have height requirements. If you think they might be unsure most rides can be found on YouTube so do check them out and get the kids watching them before you go! There are so many to choose from so here we give you what we think are the top 10 rides for the kids (and adults!!).
- Toy Story Mania – Hollywood Studios
If you have a Toy Story fan in your house then this ride is an absolute must for your fastpass list! The queues get long very quick (anything up to 150 minutes) and the fastpass’s get booked up very quick as well! They will be putting in a third track soon for this along with the building of Toy Story Land, so hopefully soon the queues won’t be as long! Toy Story Mania is a 3D based game with 5 carnival based games featuring the characters from the Toy Story films! Climb aboard an old school carnival tram to be transported between each game. If you can’t get a fastpass for this one head to it first thing in the morning or last thing at night to ride this. Compete with the rest of your family to see who can get the highest score and to see if you can beat the highest score of the day!!
You will also find a similar game at Magic Kingdom – Buzz Lightyears Space Ranger Spin. Ok so it’s not exactly the same – no 3D and no carnival games but you do get a space cannon and you get to shoot an invisible infrared laser to try and defeat Zurg! See if you can score the ultimate 999,999 in this game!!
- Tomorrowland Speedway – Magic Kingdom
Got a little one who has always dreamed of driving their very own race car? Yes it may only go 7mph but they will still love it! If your little ones are 32in tall then they are good to drive as long as accompanied by someone who is a least 54in tall! This ride is designed for the younger kids so be warned if you suffer from a bad back or bad knees then we suggest letting them ride with someone else as there are often low-speed collisions, and sudden stops and starts!!
- The Barnstormer – Magic Kingdom
The Barnstormer could be a great way to introduce your kids to rollercoaster’s. It only lasts for one minute before it is over! But there are still enough turns, drops and twists for a full rollercoaster experience! You will climb aboard a wacky stunt plane and become a part of The Great Goofini’s daredevil act! Little ones must be 35” or taller to ride this ride though!
- Kilimanjaro Safaris – Animal Kingdom
This is a fab early morning ride if you love animals and it is a great ride to get done before it gets too hot! If you can’t get there for first thing in the morning or for one of the last rides of the evening, then we recommend a fastpass for this as queues can become very long as it is an 18 minute expedition around the 110 acre Harambe Wildlife Reserve. Climb aboard an open-air safari vehicle and see how many animals you will encounter on your way, just make sure you have that camera ready for those all important pictures!
- Spaceship Earth –EPCOT
If you have a child who is interested in History then this is an awesome ride for them or if you have someone who is interested in what the future could look like then this is also for them! Step inside the iconic geosphere and travel back in time to the earliest recordings of history and see how things and ideas spread like wildfire to get us to where we are now. It is also a great way to escape some of that Floridian heat. We feel it isn’t worthy of a fastpass+ but do save it for later in the day as people are tend to be drawn to it as it is the first attraction you come across when you enter EPCOT!
- Mission: SPACE – EPCOT
Your little one ever dreamt of being an astronaut. With a recently relaunched Mission: SPACE you can dodge meteorites, enjoy a flight path with views of Earth and slingshot around the Moon. Choose between the intense Orange mission or choose the brand new less intense Green mission. Before entering your space shuttle your 4 man crew will each pick a vital role: navigator, pilot, commander or engineer and during your flight you will be given instructions to enable you to complete your mission!! The Orange mission has a height requirement of 44” where as the all new green mission has a new lowered height requirement of 40”. If you are prone to motion sickness then we suggest the Green mission to begin with!
- The Haunted Mansion – Magic Kingdom
This ride is amazing but it does have a fairly spooky interactive queue when you get inside. Once you are inside you step into the Portrait Chamber which is able to stretch to reveal some dark secrets. Then step into your carriage for this slow moving ride that is home to 999 haunts (but there is always room for one more). Work your way through the mansion into the grand ballroom where you will become the guest of honour and then when you leave the party you will leave via the graveyard where you will come across the spooks and spectres singing the haunting anthem “Grim Grinning Ghosts”! See if your ride has been hijacked as you leave the graveyard as well! You could even do a bit of celebrity spotting at this attraction – it’s not unheard of to catch the one and only Whoopi Goldberg dressed as a cast member working at this one (and if you do make sure you get that selfie and share it with us!!!) Be warned this ride does contain some frightening subject matter and once you are on the actual ride there will be no way to leave, however there is no gore and everything is friendly and suitable for all ages.
- Seven Dwarfs Mine Train – Magic Kingdom
I LOVE this ride!!!!! BUT you most definitely need a fastpass for this ride as the queue can easily be more than an hour long! If you can’t get a fastpass for this then we suggest riding first thing in the morning or last thing at night just before the park closes. It has a height requirement of 38” but is smooth and shouldn’t bother those with a mild fear of heights with only two small drops; the swinging carts add another little element of fun to the ride as well. Wind your way from the Cottage through the woods to the mine where you will find the seven dwarfs working hard (or sleeping hard in some cases). This mine scene in the middle of the ride is some of the best animatronics and lighting we have seen on any of the rides at Walt Disney World. If you don’t manage to get a fastpass for this ride you can help Doc in yet another interactive queue, there is jewel sorting and washing to be done and in the Vault you will find wooden barrels full of glowing jewels and when you turn the barrels watch the ceiling above you as it transforms! If you have Disney’s Memory Maker also check out your ride video on your My Disney Experience App after the ride but don’t forget to scan your Magic Band else it won’t be there!!!
- The Jungle Cruise – Magic Kingdom
This ride is based on the original ride which opened in 1955 at Disneyland in California and now exists at Disney Parks around the world except for Disneyland Paris. Climb aboard a boat where you will be taken on a cruise around the rivers of Adventureland where you will encounter hippos, lions, a camp of curious gorillas and many more animals in your 10 minute ride. Just be aware if you don’t like intended corny and dry humour from the skippers of the Jungle Cruise then this might not be the ride for you. This ride is a morning ride but don’t bother using a fastpass on it as the queues don’t tend to be too long.
- Kali River Rapids – Animal Kingdom
Another of my favourite rides! Be warned though you will get wet, maybe just a little bit maybe an absolute soaking – that’s the luck of the draw with this ride! If you want to ride and don’t wish to get soaked we fully suggest purchasing a poncho before riding this ride, these can be purchased before you arrive at WDW or whilst you are there. A change of clothes is also not a bad idea – which can be stored in the free (for 2 hours) lockers located near the ride! Kali River Rapids is a white water rapids attraction that will have you wishing you were sat on the side of the 12 passenger raft that is going to stay dry! You start the ride by gliding up a 90 foot knoll before you bob up and down and spin your way back down the Chakrandi River where near the end of the ride you will plummet down a 20ft slope before encountering the elephant squirters along a bridge (these are available for non riders to drench people as they go past!!). With a height requirement of 38” this is a ride for nearly all gusts at WDW and is a good use of a fastpass.
So there you have it! Some of your top 10 rides for the kids at Walt Disney World! We would love to know what your kids favourite rides are as well!
